The bill 25
In force since September 2022, all of the measures that make up the law on the protection of personal information, known as Bill 25, will have to be in force in organizations that hold personal data of Quebec residents by September 2024.
But what is Bill 25?
Bill 25, or initially Bill 64, puts in place measures to better control the collection, use, disclosure and retention of personal information by businesses and organizations. It strengthens the rights of citizens with respect to their personal data.

It also provides for stricter penalties in the event of non-compliance with the law.
Hera are some tips for complying with Bill 25
Identify a Privacy Officer
Designate an individual to be responsible for the protection of personal information within your organization. (This is specifically required by law).
Establish a privacy policy
Adopt a clear and comprehensive privacy policy that explains how you collect, use and protect the personal information of your customers, employees and other stakeholder.
Get the consent
Obtain informed consent from individuals before collecting, using or disclosing their personal information. This consent is not forever, as individuals may change their minds at any time, as required by law.
Eliminate unnecessary personal information
Destroy personal information that you no longer need or require. At the same time, limit the collection of data not needed for your business.
Make sure your information is secure
Implement appropriate security measures to protect personal data from loss, theft, unauthorized access, disclosure or destruction.
Train your employees
Provide adequate training to your employees on privacy policies and practices and the steps they can take to protect it.
